Become a United States Citizen
Naturalization is the process through which a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) becomes a United States citizen. U.S. citizenship offers valuable rights and protections, including the ability to vote in federal elections, obtain a U.S. passport, petition certain family members for immigration benefits, and fully participate in civic life.
At our firm, we help lawful permanent residents navigate every step of the naturalization process, ensuring applications are prepared accurately and efficiently.
Who Is Eligible for Naturalization?
While every case is different, most applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for U.S. citizenship:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder).
- Meet the required period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States.
- Demonstrate good moral character.
- Be able to read, write, and speak basic English, unless an exception or exemption applies.
- Pass the U.S. civics examination, unless exempt.
- Demonstrate an attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
- Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance.
Most lawful permanent residents become eligible to apply after five years. However, spouses of U.S. citizens may qualify after three years if they meet all legal requirements.
The Naturalization Process
The citizenship process begins by filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
After the application is filed, applicants typically complete the following steps:
- Biometrics Appointment – USCIS collects fingerprints, photographs, and a signature to conduct required background checks.
- Naturalization Interview – A USCIS officer reviews the application, confirms eligibility, and administers the English and civics tests, if applicable.
- USCIS Decision – If the application is approved, USCIS schedules the applicant for a naturalization ceremony.
- Oath of Allegiance Ceremony – After taking the Oath of Allegiance, the applicant officially becomes a United States citizen and receives a Certificate of Naturalization.
Why Legal Guidance Matters
Although many individuals qualify for naturalization, every case is unique. Prior immigration issues, extended travel outside the United States, criminal history, tax concerns, or other factors may affect eligibility or delay the process.
Our office carefully reviews each client’s immigration history, prepares complete and accurate applications, and helps clients prepare for their naturalization interview. Our goal is to make the citizenship process as smooth and stress-free as possible.
